Achievement & Leadership

Statement of Achievement and Potential for Leadership

As I have completed the Master of Library and Information Studies program, I have made gains that will benefit me both personally and professionally.  Some gains may be more difficult to witness within programs and work products but may be seen in how I lead in many areas of my life.  I gained skills that not only impact how I help others meet information and cognitive needs but skills that rely on emotional intelligence (Goal 1.1, 1.2, 3.2).  For example, I will use emotional intelligence skills, such as empathy and seeing issues from a third-person perspective, as I assume leadership roles as a school librarian and in my personal life (Goal 3.1).

I also gained many practical skills that will assist me in working with students, colleagues, families, the community, and all stakeholders.  Skills and resource knowledge I have acquired will further my ability to communicate, collaborate, and share resources (Goal 1.8).  Currently, it has led me to be chosen for several committees to help lead my school and district to assess needs and make changes.  These include committees such as the Harrah Public Schools Strategic Planning and Virginia Smith Elementary’s Social Emotional Learning and Community Outreach committees (Goal 1.6, 1.8).  Furthermore, I am proud that I have shown the ability to understand, synthesize, and apply coursework by carrying a 4.0 GPA throughout my college career and having had assignments be chosen as examples for others to follow (Goal 4.1).

Overall, I have gained knowledge that has helped me lead others to becoming more informed and connected while also enhancing my ability to advocate contributions of school libraries and certified librarians.  In fact, my two years of advocating for libraries and full-time libraries led to my most proud achievement.  I was able to influence our district’s superintendent in deciding to hire full-time librarians at each of the district’s elementary sites (Goal 2.1, 2.2).  The opened librarian job was offered to me; however, the district had to implement a hiring freeze because of COVID-19.  I am still proud that the MLIS program prepared me to advocate and share all that librarians can offer and will be excited, and ready, when I get to fulfill the many roles of a school librarian.
