School Librarian – My area of specialization is school librarianship. This position allows me to be a leader within the school and the community. I can work to support children and staff in caring about issues in the world, connecting to, and through, quality information sources, and creating and sharing knowledge. School librarian is a career that includes many roles.
- Teacher – School librarians are also referred to as teacher librarians. I will ensure my lessons support the American Association of School Librarians Standards for Learners. My overarching goals will be for students to be able to think critically, create knowledge, share information, and be lifelong learners.
- Collaborator – Not only will I teach students in many library-focused and information-focused lessons, such as how to locate books and how to answer inquiries, I will support teachers in other curriculum areas. As I will likely serve as a librarian in Oklahoma, I will support and co-teach lessons surrounding the Oklahoma Academic Standards. Collaboration will also involve ensuring students and staff have access to quality resources and tools.
- Advocate – Advocacy is needed to promote how important and influential libraries and certified librarians are to schools and student learning. Especially in an era when school library budgets are often neglected, it is imperative that administration and stakeholders understand the difference appropriately staffed libraries can make. This can include supporting students who struggle academically, challenging advanced students, providing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities, and more!
- Manager – Library management can involve managing people, the collection, budgets, and library use. Effective communication and leadership skills along with emotional intelligence will help me be effective in assigning tasks, promoting a positive environment, and accomplishing library tasks. Organization skills, being detail-oriented, and understanding user needs will support collection development and management. Librarians are also often required to manage fundraising opportunities as well as budgets. This will involve running book fairs and ordering materials for library use. Lastly, the use of library space can be placed under management as the physical layout and uses should be overseen by the school librarian.
